How Many Ounces can You Take on a Plane?

How Many Ounces can You Take on a Plane?

As you may already know, traveling on a plane requires passengers to follow a number of guidelines. One of the restrictions is the number of ounces of liquid that can be carried by a passenger. Before you are ready to take your flight, it is necessary to know how many ounces you can take on a plane in order to avoid additional screening.

The TSA 3-1-1 rule restricts the amount of liquids, creams, gels, and pastes one can bring along in the carry-on luggage. Apart from the amount of liquids to be carried, there are certain exceptional items that you are not allowed to take on the plane. Find out everything about these rules in detail so that you have a convenient security check with no last-minute complications.

Liquid Items Allowed on Planes

As per the TSA rule, one can only carry liquid items in containers. The items must be the ones that are approved by airlines. All the containers you want to carry have to be packed in a 1-quart bag. Every passenger is only allowed to carry 1 such bag.

With reference to the above, the items under the TSA 3-1-1 rule include:

  • Mouthwash
  • Lotion
  • Toothpaste
  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Gel
  • Nail polish
  • Eye drops

Tip: To make sure that you don’t have to go through an extra screening process, stick a nametag to the items in the bag. It will be easier for an airline to screen them without taking much time.

Exceptional Liquids Approved by Airlines

There can be many instances when you may have to carry certain items for health and safety reasons. So, the TSA has made some exceptions to the liquids which are allowed in a carry-on in certain situations.

Some exceptions to the 3-1-1 rule are:

  • Baby care items
  • Breast milk
  • Baby formula
  • Prescribed medication
  • Frozen items
  • Juices or liquid food for passengers with special needs
  • Hand sanitizer

It must be noted that usually, the approved limit is 3.4 ounces when you have to carry hand sanitizers. But, depending on the coronavirus pandemic scenario, this limit can be increased.

Tip: If you want to know whether a certain item is allowed on the plane or how many ounces you can take on the plane with respect to it, do contact the Hazardous Material Safety Administration pipeline.

Fluids Prohibited on a Flight

Transportation Security Administration or TSA prohibits some liquids on the plane to ensure the safety of passengers. Even when you follow the 3-1-1 rule, these items may not be allowed as per the guidelines. Any fluid that can be hazardous to be carried on the plane is restricted by TSA for the security of the staff as well.

A few items prohibited to be carried are:

  • Sprays for self-defense (like pepper spray)
  • Sharp objects including scissors with blades exceeding 4 inches, razor blades, and box cutters
  • Explosives and incendiary items
  • Liquid items (insecticides, spray paint, and laundry starch used for non-toiletry purposes)

Tip: You can find the complete list of restricted items on the TSA official website.

How Many Fluid Ounces can You Take on a Plane?

In sync with the TSA 3-1-1 guideline, each passenger can carry fluids in a container not exceeding 3.4 ounces or 100 millimeters. The quartz bag in which the liquid items are packed must go through the security checkpoint separately. This rule is mostly applicable to the carry-on bag which passengers want to take with them on the plane.

Note: TSA has strict rules on liquid items since terrorists’ plots to ignite liquid explosives were revealed in August 2006. Hence, the quantity is limited.

Liquid Ounces You can Take on a Domestic Plane

While traveling domestically, pack the liquid items you want to carry in containers. These should not be exceeding 3.4 ounces/100 milliliters in quantity.

All the liquids, gels, and aerosols such as toothpaste, lotions, cough syrup, and consumables like water, soda, and peanut butter should be placed separately. You can keep each of these in one clear quartz bag so that the screening process is smooth. Given that you go through the x-ray with the liquid items, then there are chances of additional checking by the TSA agent.

How Many Ounces can You Take on a Plane Internationally?

The general carry-on rule of TSA remains the same for international flights. That is, one passenger is allowed to take one see-through quartz bag with fluid items packed in a container, not more than 100 milliliters.

You can take along fluids more than 3.4 ounces when they are inclusive of duty-free items purchased internationally and you are traveling to the United States with a connecting flight. These duty-free items should have a receipt of purchase made within 48 hours.

Tip: The items should be carried in a secure bag which is visible clearly and, moreover, has not been tampered with.

How Many Total Ounces can You Take on a Plane?

A passenger can carry liquid items such as toiletries, medicine, and more in separate containers. The quantity of each should not be more than 100 milliliters. There is no limit to the number of such containers to bring on the plane but one passenger should fit all the items in a single quart bag.

Tip: It is recommended to not pack the quart bag too tightly or there are chances of additional screening and security checks.

FL Ounces You can Take on a Plane in Checked Baggage

A bag that is delivered to an airline to be transported separately and remains inaccessible to the passenger is checked baggage. Even though the restriction imposed on the fluids carried in a carry-on is stricter, there are certain policies that are imposed on checked luggage as well.

Toiletries are allowed in the checked baggage without any FL-ounce limit. However, one can only carry a total of 70 ounces (2 kg) of aerosols, each container not going above 18 ounces (0.5 kg). The passengers should note that this doesn’t include items specifically restricted or deemed hazardous to be carried on an airplane.

Note: A pepper spray is allowed in the checked baggage within a limit of fl. oz. (118 ml).

How Many Ounces as Carry-on can You Take on a Plane?

The luggage a flyer takes on the plane with him/her is called a cabin or carry-on bag. The 3-1-1 rule is mainly applicable to this type of baggage. Therefore, this is known as the TSA carry-on rule.

Please note that the total liquid ounces permitted in the carry-on per person are in containers of 100 milliliters. There is no limit on the number of such containers. This is subject to the condition that all the items should be packed in one clear quart-sized bag.

Glass Ounces to carry on a Plane

Travelers are allowed to bring glass on a plane. To bring liquid in a glass in a cabin bag, it must be below 100 ml. There is no limit to the glass bottles one can take in the checked baggage if they are under the total weight limit. You can also bring with you alcohol in glass bottles up to 5 liters below 70% ABV.

While you do so,  make sure that you pack the glass items well in a cloth. Then you can place them between the luggage so that there is no chance of breakage.

How many Ounces can You Take on a JetBlue Plane?

While traveling by a JetBlue plane, check in advance about the guidelines of this airline. Every airline has to follow the TSA 3-1-1 guideline and JetBlue is not an exception to the same.

JetBlue Airline’s rules include the following:

  • Passengers are allowed to carry a reasonable amount of duty-free items. But the limitations may vary depending on the destination.
  • You can carry any assistive or medical devices with fluids to allow a comfortable flight. The carry-on weight restrictions are applicable.
  • Passengers traveling with a baby will get exempted from the amount of liquid baby food, formula, and breast milk carried above the limit of 3.4 ounces per person.
  • Batteries can be carried with necessary precautions such as wrapping the package with insulating tape. Hence, the battery will not fall out of the package.

How many Ounces can You Take on a Plane of Delta?

Delta Airlines does adhere to the 3-1-1 rule by the Transportation Security Administration. This means that while carrying any fluid or liquid item, a passenger must pack it in a single quart bag inside containers up to 3.4 ounces. The quart bag you choose can be a clear zip-lock packet. Or, any sealable bag specifically meant for traveling can also be approved.

In addition to the above, please remember that purchasing any beverage past the security checkpoint will not fall under the Delta Airline carry-on liquid restrictions.

How Many Ounces can I Take on Southwest Airlines?

Since the basic policy is the same, while traveling by aircraft on Southwest, you must adhere to the 3-1-1 term. Southwest Airlines exempts child nourishments and medication items as per the same term. It is advised to remove the bag for liquid items and place it in a separate tray. In this way, you will be able to avoid any alarm going off during the screening.

When you are traveling to the United States, you are allowed to carry liquid items even when they are above the limit of 3.4 oz. Pack them in a tamper-evident bag so that they can be easily cleared during TSA screening. The duty-free items allowed do not include items explicitly prohibited by this body.

Extra Ounces to Take on a Plane

Normally, when you carry any liquid more than the specified amount, a TSA agent may confiscate it. You are allowed to take with you fluids in 3.4 ounces bottles, all packed in a 1-quart bag. However, there are exceptions to the items that can be taken on an aircraft in a carry-on bag including medications and baby care items.

Provided that you have a baby traveling with you, then getting away with certain fluids like baby food, breast milk, baby formula, disinfecting wipes, etc., can be easier. Even though this is considered a loophole in the 3-1-1 rule, it is valid.

Conclusion
How many ounces you are allowed to take on a plane should now be clear. It is common to get confused with the number of rules to be followed while traveling by plane. But when you want to know whether a specific item is allowed to be brought, please refer to your airline or TSA’s rules. This will help you avoid any complications on your trip.
